Drive: The Mission of God in the World
Lesson 2, Family Devotion

Each week from 1966 to 1973, America tuned in to watch the Impossible Missions Force, a team of government agents sent on a series of covert operations to combat the evil organizations and dictators of the world. The show was titled Mission: Impossible. You might remember the movie remakes starring Tom Cruise. What made the show so memorable was the way in which the lead agent would receive his assignment. The assignment was typically delivered via a recording, and it would always begin with the following statement: “Your mission, should you decide to accept it . . .” Upon completion of the assignment instructions, the playback device would “self-destruct in five seconds.”

You may not be a government official being sent out on a secret mission, but as a follower of Christ you are an agent being sent out on a very important mission. As Christ’s followers, we are agents of the highest kind. We don’t represent a government; we represent the King of Kings, and we have been given the single most important mission that one can receive.

The great news is that Jesus has given us specific instructions for our mission, and He even promises to be with us every step of the way. Without His promise it would be an impossible task, but with His presence in our lives our mission becomes not only possible, but also exciting!

Take a look at Matthew 28:16–20. It is here that you will discover your mission assignment. In this very important part of God’s Word, we read of Jesus’ meeting with His close disciples for the very last time. In this meeting before His ascension back to His Father, Jesus laid before them their mission assignment. These followers took their assignment very seriously. What is important for us to remember is that Jesus’ instructions to them were not just for them, but also for us. It is His desire to send us out as well in order to make a lasting Kingdom-sized impact on our world. Like the Mission: Impossible agents, we are left to decide whether we will accept the mission.

CONNECTION QUESTIONS
1. Have you ever thought of yourself as an agent? How does it make you feel to be sent out on a mission representing the King of Kings?
2. Think about your immediate world, including your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members. How might God use you to share the Good News of Christ with them? Now think of the world at large. How can you fulfill your mission to those living in other parts of the world?
3. Is there anything in your life that might keep you from fulfilling the mission assignment that you’ve been given? Perhaps it is fear of rejection. Maybe there is an area of sin in your life that needs to be dealt with first. What can you do right now to make yourself more mission-ready?
4. What is one way that your family can together fulfill Christ’s Great Commission? How might you be able to serve together?
5. Part of Christ’s Commission is to teach people to obey His commands. How well do you know them? Do you understand God’s Word enough to share it with others? What can you begin doing both as a family as well as individuals to grow in your knowledge of God’s Word?
