 REVERB::Living Loud::Barnabas: Supporting as We Go::lesson six

Family Devotion

Ever Googled the word encourager? Try it. You’ll quickly see after getting three or four pages into it that almost every Website listed has something to do with being a Christian. So, do Christians hold a corner on the market of encouragement? Well, maybe not, but then again—probably! Why is that?

It’s because out of every truth that can exist, Christianity’s is the most encouraging of all. Everything else pales in comparison. So, with news like ours, there’s every reason to be an encourager. Discouragement is everywhere. What the world needs are more people like the biblical example of Barnabas. As a family, read Acts 4:32–36, 11:19–24, and 15:36–41.

Did you know that Barnabas’ real name wasn’t Barnabas but Joseph? Barnabas was the nickname of Joseph, the Levite from Cyprus. It was the name given to him by the apostles. It literally meant “son of encouragement” or, in other words, encourager. The only way that Barnabas could have acquired that name was because his character reflected it in his daily life. Barnabas had a lot to be encouraging about. He knew something that most people in that day did not know—a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Barnabas obviously knew how to express it in such a way that his very life was uplifting with the reality of Christ. So, when news traveled back to Jerusalem that a church had begun in Antioch among the Greeks, it was the encourager Barnabas they sent to spur them forward with good news, uplifting words, lots of love, and a lifestyle that would serve as an example.

Today’s society might make some attempts at encouragement, but let’s face it—they’re really posers. There is really nothing that the U.S. government can do or say, nothing that Simon Cowell can say (in those rare moments when he decides to say something encouraging), and nothing that we can hear from our friends in the way of encouragement apart from Christ.

The fact is that any word of encouragement outside of Christ is just slapping a bandage on the subject. Real encouragement comes through the lives and the words of those who know the eternal truth of salvation. That’s who Barnabas was, and that’s what God calls on us to be—He calls us to live the truth in love, in grace, and in help. You have something that others do not have. You have the real ability to be an encourager.

Connection Questions

1. What nicknames have you ever been given that are true reflections of your personality and character?

2. How have others identified you as an encourager, and in what ways?

3. The world offers a lot of discouragement. How do you contribute to the discouragement that exists around you?

4. How would you choose to counter the discouragement with encouragement? What could you say or do?

5. How can you encourage other Christians to become encouragers and follow your example?
